In this video, we’ll look at what it means to be in good mental health, and give you a few tips on how to keep it up.
Mental health is about how we think, feel, and behave. Being in good mental health means that you’re able to be productive, cope with stress, and reach your full potential.
It’s important to understand that being in good mental health isn’t just about not having a mental illness. In fact, people with mental illnesses like depression or anxiety can have excellent mental health practices. Likewise, you can be totally free from mental illness and still not be in good mental health.
Let’s take a look at a few things you can do to support good mental health.
Start by making sure you’re living a healthy lifestyle. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night, eat a healthy, balanced diet, and get regular exercise. You’d be surprised how much of an impact your lifestyle can have on your mental health.
Next, take some time to connect with others. Although your schedule may be tight due to your caregiving duties, give yourself permission to take a night off once in a while and get together with friends or family. Even if you can’t meet up in person, talking on the phone or texting with someone you’re close with can improve your mental health.
It’s also a good idea to have a few stress management strategies ready for when the weight of being a caregiver starts to take its toll. There are a number of stress relief exercises, like deep breathing and mindful meditation, that you can do in a few minutes from literally anywhere.
Don’t be afraid to reach out for support whether it be to someone you trust, a spiritual leader or therapist.
Sometimes being a caregiver can make you feel isolated and alone. There are a lot of different self-help and support groups available for caregivers, both face to face and online. Talking with people who understand your situation can give you perspective, and you might gain valuable insights from hearing the experiences of others.
Staying in good mental health will make it easier to deal with all the day-to-day challenges that caregiving can throw at you.
By spending just a few minutes a day on your mental health, you’ll feel better, deal better, and provide better care.
